Wagle ki Duniya to Main Kab Saas Banoongi... in a nutshell!

Bhharati Achrekar, who is upbeat about her new comedy show Main Kab Saas Banoongi tells JYOTHI VENKATESH that today there is a very thin line of demarcation between TV and films.

The veteran character actress Bhharati Achrekar who is winning accolades for her role in the daily sitcom Main Kab Saas Banoongi has been turning down offers to be part of reality shows on television, though she has been offered quite a few. “I feel that reality shows are nothing but mockery. The only exception to the rule was the Sa Re Ga Ma show in Marathi in which I took part as a guest.” It is not surprising that Bhharati chose to appear as a guest in Sa Re Ga Ma because she is a M.A in music.

Bhharati feels that though TV serials keep her in check, the tragedy as far as TV today is that the day your show is off air, you are out of the minds of the audiences. “My regret is that I have not been as exposed to the audiences as I feel I should have been only because my serials were mostly on air on Doordarshan and not on big satellite channels”.

Though it was the serial Wagle Ki Duniya that established Bhharati Achrekar, she feels that her role as the saas in Main Kab Saas Banoongi that is her career’s best . “Der aaya magar durust aaya. It is very easy for me to do loud characters like in Kya Hoga Nimmo Ka but very difficult to underplay. It is easy to do slapstick. When you underplay your role, you may not get huge laughter but a nice smile, like I get now. It isn’t a slap stick, but a down to earth comedy. There is a very thin line as far as thecharacter is concerned because it can swing to be a negative character even if I place my hand on my waist. I have to curb myself when I talk and underplay like I did in Wagle Ki Duniya.”

Bhharati’s main grouse against the film industry these days is that major roles are written keeping mind only the male actors like Paresh Rawal or Anupam Kher and not female actors. “The days are over when actresses like Shubha Khote, Shashikala and Nirupa Roy used to get a lot of roles as character artistes. There is a line of demarcation between TV and films. Today it is TV alone which offers actresses good roles whereas films offer scope only for actors”

Bhharati played the role of Ranveer Sheorey’s mother in Ugly Aur Pagli recently. “You have to do films to see that you retain your face value. What shall I do, if I do not roles which I feel I deserve? If I try to be choosy, I will have no other alternative but to sit at home twiddling my thumbs. Beggars are not choosers and you have to accept from whatever you are offered. Today even if just one scene is good, I do not mind doing a film in which I am required to face the camera only for three days.”

Bhharati, who has produced serials like Zamana Badal Gaya, Tauba Meri Tauba, Mewalal and Kathasthu (Marathi), besides two Marathi films in partnership with her friend Lata Narvekar – Sari Var Sari and Sakhi, is planning to launch a film in Hindi as and when she is able to get a good script on her hand, since she feels that times have changed with the phenomenal success of Bheja Fry and one needs good actors, not just stars to make a good film.
